Small-scale plays and musicals dominated the 2026 Toronto Theatre Critics’ Awards, with a focus on intimate productions that packed a punch. Through the Eyes of God, a 45-minute drama about a mother's desperate quest to rescue her daughter from human trafficking, took home top honors for director Thomas Morgan Jones and solo performer Gabriella Sundar Singh, as well as best production of a play. This powerful piece, staged in the intimate Backspace at Theatre Passe Muraille, left a lasting impression on the jury.
But it wasn't just small-scale shows that impressed. Bug, a harrowing and claustrophobic production of Tracy Letts' play, received nods for lead actor Nicholas Eddie and scenic designer Sophie Ann Rooney. Eldritch Theatre, known for its dark and twisted tales, received a special citation for its expanded season at the Red Sandcastle Theatre, with Robyn Grant-Moran praising the company's growth without sacrificing its unique style.
Indie theatre continued to shine in the musical categories. Martin Julien's portrayal of Man in Chair in The Drowsy Chaperone earned him the best lead performance in a musical award, showcasing his ability to telegraph the character's love of Broadway without extensive singing or dancing. Meredith Shedden, artistic director of Bowtie Productions, was recognized for her direction of Tick, Tick… Boom!, which played a short run at Alumnae Theatre.
Toronto's larger theatre companies also had a strong showing. Crow's Theatre received multiple commendations for its performances and design in both its main spaces. Octet, an a cappella musical about internet addiction, won awards for best production of a musical and best ensemble performance. Rogers v. Rogers, a digital design masterpiece, also received recognition.
Crow's small studio theatre shows were also celebrated. Matthew G. Brown's performance in The Christmas Market earned him the best supporting performance in a play award, while the casts of Pu Songling: Strange Tales and The Division received best ensemble performance in a play awards. Ashley Naomi's sound design for The Veil contributed to the play's eerie atmosphere.
Vanessa Sears' lead performance as Juliet in & Juliet was commended for its high-energy and impressive acting, singing, and dancing. Sophia Walker, Kristen Thomson, Damien Atkins, and Thomas Winiker were also recognized for their nuanced performances in Slave Play, Fulfillment Centre, Robin Hood: A Very Merry Family Musical, and Kimberly Akimbo, respectively.
Ronnie Burkett, a renowned puppeteer, won the inaugural best puppetry award for Little Willy. Bonnie Beecher's lighting design for The Welkin transformed the Soulpepper Theatre into a painting-like experience. Alyssa Martin and Christopher Wheeldon were honored for their choreography in Dance Nation and MJ, respectively.
Writing awards went to The Neighbours, a thrilling thriller by Canadian playwright Nicolas Billon, and Eureka Day, an anti-vax satire by American scribe Jonathan Spector. Toronto Star critic Joshua Chong praised The Neighbours as 'horror at its best', comparing it to the 'shimmering glow of a surrealist painting'.
This year's awards celebrate the power of small-scale productions, indie theatre, and diverse artistic expressions, highlighting the depth and creativity within Toronto's theatre scene.
