Roman Anthony Reflects on His Journey to Represent Team USA in the World Baseball Classic
Three years ago, Roman Anthony was a spectator in Miami, cheering for the USA in the World Baseball Classic championship against Japan. Little did he know that he would be on the other side of the field just three years later, representing his country. Anthony, fresh off being drafted by the Red Sox, had grand aspirations for his baseball career, but the idea of wearing the USA jersey was not something he had envisioned so soon.
"The last World Baseball Classic was a memorable experience for me," Anthony recalled. "I was there as a fan, watching one of the games in Miami after a spring training day. It was incredible to witness the excitement and talent firsthand."
Despite his short stint in the majors during his rookie season, Anthony has quickly risen through the ranks. He was recently named as an injury replacement for Corbin Carroll on Team USA for the upcoming World Baseball Classic. Being part of this prestigious team is a dream come true for the young player.
"Getting that phone call was a moment I've dreamed of as a kid," Anthony said. "It was thrilling to be considered for such an opportunity with such a talented group of players. I'm truly grateful and excited about this chance."
With just 71 games under his belt in the major leagues, Anthony recognizes the value of this experience. Being surrounded by the country's best players will provide him with a unique learning opportunity.
"It's an incredible experience to be around these guys," he said. "I'm looking forward to learning from the best in the game and from the many veteran players who have been in this for a long time. It's a great chance to improve my skills and understand the importance of teamwork and representation."
One of the highlights of this journey will be playing alongside his former teammate, Alex Bregman. Bregman reached out to Anthony to check in and express his support. "It's a great opportunity to take the field with him again," Anthony said, emphasizing the importance of these connections.
Despite not playing in the postseason last October due to an injury, Anthony is eager to gain valuable big-game experience through the World Baseball Classic. "I grew up watching these players on TV, and it was awesome to play against some of them last year," he said. "But playing with them and learning from their backgrounds and experiences will be even more rewarding."
As Anthony prepares for this exciting challenge, he remains focused on his goal of coming out on top. "I'm super stoked about this opportunity," he said. "I want to be a good teammate and represent this country to the best of my abilities."
