Joan Mir's Honda Warning: Ducati's Pace is Unstoppable at Sepang MotoGP Test (2026)

Honda's Long Road Ahead: Can They Catch Up to Ducati's Dominance?

In a revealing statement, Joan Mir has highlighted the significant gap between Honda and Ducati's performance during the Sepang MotoGP Test. Despite his initial satisfaction with his Sprint simulation, a closer look at the Ducatis' pace left Mir with a stark realization.

Mir's impressive 1:56s time on day two, which placed Honda at the top of the timesheets, was overshadowed by the Ducati riders' exceptional pace. "It's a big ask to match their speed," Mir admitted, referring to the Ducatis, especially Alex Marquez.

But here's where it gets controversial... Mir's analysis of Honda's performance reveals a subtle improvement over last year, but it's not enough to bridge the gap to Ducati. He believes Ducati has taken a significant step forward this preseason, leaving Honda in their wake.

To illustrate the point, let's consider Mir's ten-lap simulation. Without his final lap, he would have finished 9.096s behind Alex Marquez, a margin that would have placed him sixth in last October's Sprint race. That's a significant disadvantage, and it raises questions about Honda's ability to compete at the front.

Gresini's Marquez, now riding factory-spec machinery, also turned heads with a scorching 1:57.295s early in his Sprint simulation. Mir acknowledged the impressive lap time but explained the challenge of sustaining such pace on the Honda.

"That's almost a qualifying lap!" Mir exclaimed. "But the next lap, I'd be doing a 2:01 because the tire would be cooked! It's a common issue in time attack mode."

Mir, who crashed out of last October's Sprint but bounced back for a podium finish in the grand prix, described the latest RC213V as slightly improved in every area. However, he emphasized that it's not a revolutionary change but rather small evolutions across various aspects of the bike.

"We're talking top five, maybe top four, but not much more," Mir said when asked about Honda's race pace. "Grip is still our biggest weakness. With more grip, we can control the spin better and reduce tire wear, which is crucial for race pace."

Team-mate Luca Marini echoed Mir's sentiments, finishing the test in 13th overall on the Honda. The final pre-season test at Buriram will be crucial for Honda, as they need to choose their final engine spec for the 2026 season after moving down the concession rankings.

With Valentino Rossi's departure and Marc Marquez's injury struggles, Honda faces a challenging road ahead. Can they find the grip and pace to challenge Ducati's dominance? Only time will tell, but for now, the signs are not promising.
